About the role

Reporting to our Chief Executive, the General Counsel and Executive Director - Legal & Governance is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and responsible for overseeing the provision of strategic, timely and high-quality legal advice. The successful candidate will be required to provide and maintain an effective legal governance and assurance framework, utilizing interpretive skills, evaluation tools and constructive thinking to address, new, emerging and existing legal challenges for the organisation.

Key responsibilities include managing WorkSafe's legal risk; overseeing the development and implementation of the Strategic Policy and the legislation administrated by WorkSafe; managing FOI, privacy matters, and civil and criminal litigation, and disputes; providing strategic and operational advice on health and safety legislation, compensation and corporate matters; and overseeing the administrative review of decisions made by inspectors and authorized decision - makers.  You will also be responsible for responding to inquiries from integrity bodies and provide a Secretariat function to the Board. Key external stakeholders will include the Minister's Office, employer and employee representatives, and Department of Justice and Community Safety.

Skills, Experience & Attributes

The appointment requires a highly experienced lawyer and executive leader who has a demonstrated capacity to effectively participate and contribute at the senior levels of an organisation operating in a complex regulatory environment.  You will provide strategic, practical legal advice and have high level analytical and critical legal and litigation decision-making capabilities; significant experience in interpreting complex legislation; an ability to recommend strategic legislative and/or policy amendments; as well as a proven capability to drive and implement change and to develop strategies to manage financial, operational, legal and reputational risk. You will provide effective legal direction and advice to team members and enjoy mentoring and assisting them to reach their full potential. Experience and understanding of OH&S Legislation and workers compensation legislation is required.
