About the role

Medical Panels has a critical role in the WorkCover dispute resolution process. An individually constituted Medical Panel supports the fair and timely resolution of medical disputes.  A panel of doctors are appointed by the Convenor from the list of 250 specialist medical practitioners. The panel provide final and binding opinions and reasons in relation to medical questions referred under the Victorian Workers’ Compensation legislation and the Wrongs Act 1958.

Referrals can be made by the Accident Compensation Conciliation Service, the Courts, WorkCover agents, and self-insurers.

The office of the Convenor consists of the Convenor, three Deputy Convenors, and employees provided by WorkSafe Victoria to support the operations of the organisation.

The Legal Manager is responsible for the provision of governance, guidance, instruction and leadership in managing the timely delivery of in-house workplace and personal injury legal advice. This includes technical impairment benefits advice, and ensuring compliance with legislative timeframes. This role will also be responsible for: 

  • The provision of high quality, client focused, policy advice, strategic and practical advice to the Convenor, Director and Panel Members.
  • Providing leadership, guidance and support to a team of in-house workplace and personal injury lawyers and technical specialists in the provision of legal and specialist advice on personal injury and public law issues.
  • The development, implementation and delivery of legal education compliance programs to Medical Panel members and the Legal team.

About you

  • A minimum of 7 years post admission experience
  • A strong background in Workers Compensation or public liability and the provision of legal and policy advice in government, along with strong statutory interpretation skills highly desirable
  • Professional qualifications in law, including admission to practice as a Solicitor and capacity to hold a full practicing certificate are mandatory.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of legal practitioners or subject matter experts through a period of change, and effectively manage complex workloads that meet quality standards, targets and timeframes.
  • High level verbal and written communication, facilitation and training skills with experience in communicating information that can be easily understood by a range of audiences.
  • Excellent management and organisational skills including an ability to prioritise in a dynamic, complex environment and the capacity to deal effectively with a wide diversity of tasks and to work to deadlines and budgets.
  • An ability to provide and obtain relevant legal, policy and operational advice on behalf of the Convenor, Director and Panel Members that meets the required needs.
